Studies on larval population densities and adult emergence rates of the Brugian filariasis vectors Mansonia bonneae Edwards and Ma. dives Schiner were conducted in freshwater swamp forest bordering the Sadong River, Serian District, Sarawak, East Malaysia, during 1984-85. Three species of aquatic host-plants in the Family Araceae were identified as supporting immature stages of the Ma. bonneae/dives complex. Proportions of positive plants were 4.7%, 6.5% and 3.4% with 6.4 +/- 2.6, 7.3 +/- 2.8 and 10.1 +/- 1.1 larvae per positive plant, respectively, for the plant species Homalomena cordata Schott, H. rostrata Griffiths and Hydrostemma motleyi (Hook. f.) Mabberley. These data indicate no significant preferences between the three types of host-plant. Detailed monitoring of the host-plant H. cordata revealed no significant monthly fluctuations in larval density per plant nor the proportion of positive plants. 11.6% of larvae were Ma. dives and 88.4% were Ma. bonneae. Mean daily yields of Ma. bonneae/dives adults per square metre of H. cordata vegetated water surface were 0.45 males plus 0.57 females during the wet season (December-February) compared with 0.2 males plus 0.31 females during the dry season (June-August). Thus output of adults per plant was approximately halved, and suitable breeding areas were further reduced, during the dry season. By extrapolation from these rates, a crude mean estimate for productivity of Ma. bonneae/dives females is 1.6 million per hectare per annum in swamp forest habitats vegetated with any of the host-plants studied. 相似文献

Horizontal primary roots of Zea mays L. were photographed during the course of their gravireaction and during a preceding growth period in the vertical orientation. The displacement, by root elongation, of marker particles on the root surface was recorded. The particle-displacement rates were used to estimate the distribution of elemental elongation rates along opposite sides of the growing root apex. In the temperature range 21–25°C there was a stimulation of local elongation rates along the upper side of a gravireacting root and a reduction (and sometimes a cessation) of elongation along the lower side. Elemental elongation rates have been related to the development of root curvature, and the magnitude of the differential growth between upper and lower sides required for a particular rate of bending has also been estimated. The results complement, and are compatible with, findings relating to the distribution of certain endogenous growth regulators believed to participate in the gravireaction.Abbreviation RELEL

Summary A differential infrared CO2 analyser combined with a 12 channel gas handling system have been used for the measurement of CO2 evolution rates of soil samples. A constant flow of air over the soil was maintained during the incubation period. Automatic sequential measurement and recording of the increase of the CO2 content of the flushed air of the 12 channels lasted 24 min with a dwell time of 2 min per channel. The heterogeneous Poisson process with discretized exponential quadratic rate function is considered. Maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters of the rate function are derived for the case when the data consists of numbers of occurrences in consecutive equal time periods. A likelihood ratio test of the null hypothesis of exponential quadratic rate is presented. Its power against exponential linear rate functions is estimated using Monte Carlo simulation. The maximum likelihood method is compared with a log-linear least squares techniques. The complete nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial (mt) genome was determined for specimens of the coral species Montipora
cactus (Bernard 1897) and Anacropora
matthai (Pillai 1973), representing two morphologically distinct genera of the family Acroporidae. These sequences were compared
with the published mt genome sequence for the confamilial species, Acropora tenuis (Dana 1846). The size of the mt genome was 17,887 bp and 17,888 bp for M. cactus and A. matthai. Gene content and organization was found to be very similar among the three Acroporidae mt genomes with a group I intron
occurring in the NADH dehyrogenase 5 (nad5) gene. The intergenic regions were also similar in length among the three corals. The control region located between the
small ribosomal RNA (ms) and the cytochrome oxidase 3 (cox3) gene was significantly smaller in M. cactus and A. matthai (both 627 bp) than in A. tenuis (1086 bp). Only one set of repeated sequences was identified at the 3′-end of the control regions in M. cactus and A. matthai. A lack of the abundant repetitive elements which have been reported for A. tenuis, accounts for the relatively short control regions in M. cactus and A. matthai. Pairwise distances and relative rate analyses of 13 protein coding genes, the group I intron and the largest intergenic
region, igr3, revealed significant differences in the rate of molecular evolution of the mt genome among the three species, with an extremely
slow rate being seen between Montipora and Anacropora. It is concluded that rapid mt genome evolution is taking place in genus Acropora relative to the confamilial genera Montipora and Anacropora although all are within the relatively slow range thought to be typical of Anthozoa. 相似文献

The mechanism of depletion of tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates by isolated rat heart mitochondria was studied using hydroxymalonate (an inhibitor of malic enzymes) and mercaptopicolinate (an inhibitor of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase) as tools. Hydroxymalonate inhibited the respiration rate of isolated mitochondria in state 3 by 40% when 2 mM malate was the only external substrate, but no inhibition was found with 2 mM malate plus 0.5 mM pyruvate as substrates. In the prescence od bicarbonate, arsenite and ATP, propionate was converted to pyruvate and malate at the rates of 14.0 ± 2.9 and 2.8 ± 1.8 nmol/mg protein in 5 min, respectively. Under these conditions, 0.1 mM mercaptopicolinate did not affect this conversion, but 2 mM hydroxymalonate inhibited pyruvate formation completely and resulted in an accumulation of malate up to 13.2 ± 2.9 nmol/mg protein. No accumulation of phosphoenolpyruvate was found under any condition tested. It is concluded that malic enzymes but not phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, are involved in conversion of propionate to pyruvate in isolated rat heart mitochondria. 相似文献

For the first time the expression of C3 and CAM in the leaves of different age of Marrubium frivaldszkyanum Boiss, is reported. With increasing leaf age a typical C3 photosynthesis pattern and high transpiration rate were found. In older leaves a shift to CAM occurred and the 24-h transpiration water loss decreased. A correlation was established between leaf area and accumulation of malate. Water loss at early stages of leaf expansion may be connected with the shift to CAM and the water economy of the whole plant. 相似文献

In bright sunlight photosynthetic activity is limited by the enzymatic machinery of carbon dioxide assimilation. This supererogation of energy can be easily visualized by the significant increases of photosynthetic activity under high CO2 conditions or other metabolic strategies which can increase the carbon flux from CO2 to metabolic pools. However, even under optimal CO2 conditions plants will provide much more NADPH + H+ and ATP that are required for the actual demand, yielding in a metabolic situation, in which no reducible NADP+ would be available. As a consequence, excited chlorophylls can activate oxygen to its singlet state or the photosynthetic electrons can be transferred to oxygen, producing highly active oxygen species such as the superoxide anion, hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide. All of them can initiate radical chain reactions which degrade proteins, pigments, lipids and nucleotides. Therefore, the plants have developed protection and repair mechanism to prevent photodamage and to maintain the physiological integrity of metabolic apparatus. The first protection wall is regulatory energy dissipation on the level of the photosynthetic primary reactions by the so-called non-photochemical quenching. This dissipative pathway is under the control of the proton gradient generated by the electron flow and the xanthophyll cycle. A second protection mechanism is the effective re-oxidation of the reduction equivalents by so-called “alternative electron cycling” which includes the water-water cycle, the photorespiration, the malate valve and the action of antioxidants. The third system of defence is the repair of damaged components. Therefore, plants do not suffer from energy shortage, but instead they have to invest in proteins and cellular components which protect the plants from potential damage by the supererogation of energy. Under this premise, our understanding and evaluation for certain energy dissipating processes such as non-photochemical quenching or photorespiration appear in a quite new perspective, especially when discussing strategies to improve the solar energy conversion into plant biomass. 相似文献

The scaling of metabolic rate with the size of algae has been discussed and researched at length. The observation that algae usually have exponents b in the equation R = a· W − b (where R is the specific growth rate, W is the organism [cell] biomass, and a and b are constants) equal to or higher than the value of −0.25 for many other organisms is generally related to resource-saturated (maximal) values of R. Recent work has shown that the exponent b for light-limited growth is more negative than −0.25. This was predicted from considerations of the package effect in photon absorption, as modulated by the volume-specific pigment content of the cells, and the photosynthetic unit size. Further work is needed to extrapolate these findings to fluctuating light environments. This minireview puts the recent work into a broader context and suggests how further work could quantify the roles of optical thickness and of spatial and temporal variations in the radiation field in determining metabolic rates. 相似文献
